The Department of Clinical
Pharmacology and Therapeutics has now established itself as a key department
in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery serving several degree courses at the
University. It is responsible for co-ordinating all the pharmacology modules
and related practical sessions for undergraduate B.Pharm., MD and B.Ch.D.
students in the Faculty. This year, the clinical pharmacology curriculum for
the clinical year MD students was revamped. In addition, the services of the
department were also requested by the Institute of Health Care and Faculty of
Education.
The research activities of the Department focus strongly on the pharmacology
of drugs used in asthma, epilepsy and immunopharmacology and a number of
papers have been presented at overseas conferences. An Outpatients Epilepsy
Clinic has been set up in conjunction with the Neurology Department, servicing
patients and serves for the monitoring of research results. On the
international scene, the Department has collaborated with the University of
Minnesota in organising an International Pharmacokinetics School. It also has
strong research links with the University of Pisa, Italy, Queen’s University
of Belfast, N. Ireland and Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. The Department
has been invited to form part of the Erasmus Thematic Network in Pharmacology
(EpharNet) and the Galenos Network Postgraduate Degree in Pharmaceutical
Sciences, an EU project co-ordinated by University of Saarbrucken, Germany.
Dr. Mark Micallef, a visiting member of the Department is working on the
immunological events in specific diseases with a special emphasis on cancer
and allergies. He is carrying out this work in collaboration with various
departments within the University and the Fujisaki Institute in Japan.
