Learning Objectives

  1. To provide a sound understanding of the principles underlying the therapeutic action of drugs

  2. To give students a general introduction to pharmacokinetics i.e. the determinants of the time course of the drug in the body, applying pharmacokinetic principles in order to provide rational drug therapy.

 Content 

  • Basic Principles:

  • Units and conversions

  • Pharmacokinetics

  • Dose calculation and drug strength

  • Drug formulations

  • Batch number, expiry date and drug names

  • Treatment chart interpretation

  • Procedure for controlled drugs

  • Hands-on hints about dispensing

  • Using a formulary

  • Drug Interactions

  • Drug treatment:

Gastrointestinal System - use of NG tube, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System – use of inhaler, Central Nervous System, Infections, Endocrine System, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Urinary tract, Malignant disease, Nutrition and Blood, Musculoskeletal & Joint disorders, Ophthalmic, ENT, Skin, Immunological products and vaccines, Anaesthesia and Wound management products and Elastic Hosiery.
