Working Carreer:

 

1956-1958: Teacher (Malta Government, Education  
                 Department).

 

1958-1966: Joined Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and
                 Overseas) as Junior Clerk.

 

1967:          Trained and work period at Banca Nazionale del
                  Lavoro, Via Vittorio Veneto Branch Roma on
                  Scholarship by the Italian Ministry of Foreign  
                  Affairs, Concurrently attended Rome University   
                  (La Sapienza) as external student.

 

1969:          Attended Junior Managers’ and Staff Instructors’
                  courses at Barclays Bank Staff Training Centre,
                  London, followed by working periods in Head   
                  Office, London, (Advances, Credits, and Staff 
                  Training Departments) and Northumberland  
                  Avenue, London branch.

 

1969-1974: Resident Instructor & Manager Staff Training
                  Centre, Barclays Bank, Malta.  During this period
                  was responsible for extending the range of
                  courses offered by the Training Centre to all
                  facets of the bank’s work, trained over 1000
                  employees on various courses, and was a
                  member of the bank’s Computer Implementation
                  and Currency Decimalisation, teams.

 

1975-1979: Industrial Investment Promotion Manager with
                 Investment Finance Bank Ltd. (MMB subsidiary)
                 working concurrently with the Malta Development
                 Corporation.

 

1980-1985: Various appointments as Branch Accountant,
                 Assistant Manager (Advances) and Branch   
                 Manager with Mid-Med Bank Ltd.

 

1985-1987: Assistant Manager (Commercial), Mid-Med Bank’s
                 main branch in Merchants Street, Valletta, Malta.

 

1988-1991: Seconded by the bank to Malta Government for
                 appointment as Managing Director of The Libyan
                 Arab-Maltese Holding Co.Ltd. – Consequential
                 directorships on the boards of 13
                 associate/subsidiary companies in Malta & Libya,
                 employing some 3500 people in industrial and
                 services activities.

 

1991-1992: Appointed by Malta Government as Chairman &  
                 CEO Malta Countertrade Co.Ltd.

 

1992-1995: Senior Manager, Mid-Med Bank plc Qormi, Malta
                 Branch.

 

1995-1998: Assistant General Manager, later Executive  
                 Manager, Mid-Med Bank Head Office, responsible
                 for Research and Overseas Offices.

 

1995-2000: Mid-Med Bank/HSBC’s representative on:

                 - Committee and Board of the Malta Commercial
                   Banks Association.

                 - Central Bank of Malta EU Advisory Committee.

                 - National Working Committee on Deposit
                   Protection Scheme.

                 - MCBA Technical Committee on Deposit    
                   Protection.

                 - MCBA Technical Committee on Consumer
                   Protection Legislation Committee.

 

1998:         Bank’s Project Leader for Introduction of the Euro.

 

August 2000: Retired from the service of HSBC Bank Malta plc.
                    After a 42+ years banking career.  Position on
                    retirement: Head, HSBC bank Malta plc’s EU
                    Integration Dept. Head Office with additional
                    assistance functions to Head Strategic Planning
                    Operations and CEO’s advisor on all EU related
                    matters.

 

October 2000: Lecturer at the University of Malta on:

                     Banking Regulation, International Banking
                     Law and Maltese Financial Services Law in the
                     Department of Banking & Finance of    
                     Economics, Management & Accountancy;

                    
                     Banking in the EU, Issues in European Banking,
                     EMU, the Euro, EU Trade Policy in the European

Member of the founder-writers team of “The Maltese Economist” newspaper – now ceased publication.

“Banco di Roma’s Mediterranean Thrust 1900-1952” – research article being published in forthcoming issue of Storia 2000 by the Department of History, The University of Malta.

Several articles on banking, economics, management and EU economic integration (particularly EMU and the Euro) in local press. Regular contributor to local radio and TV programmes and book reviewer.

Editor of Mid-Med Bank’s “Statistical Briefing” (quarterly statistics and economics publication) 1997-1999.
